About this route
From US-460 at Roanoke north along the crest past the Peaks of Otter and up to about 1,200 m near Apple Orchard Mountain, the highest point of the Parkway in Virginia, then a long descent to the James River at about 200 m. Speed limit 45 mph at most, no trucks, and no fuel on the Parkway itself: plan your stops in the towns just off it. Sections close in winter and in bad weather. When we imported this route, our map data showed a short piece of the Parkway at the James River closed, so stage 6 starts on the other side of the river.
