US-212 from Red Lodge, Montana, over the Beartooth Plateau into Wyoming and down to Cooke City, just outside the northeast entrance of Yellowstone. Switchbacks on the Montana side climb to Beartooth Pass at about 3,337 m (10,947 ft), then the road crosses open alpine plateau past lakes and snowfields. Usually open only from late May to mid October, and snow can close it on any day, even in summer. Fill up in Red Lodge or Cooke City.
