From Belgium, the Eifel is the obvious place to look when you want a ride across the border. But a route from Daun shapes your day differently from one that starts in the East Cantons. Whether it’s a loop or a one-way stage matters just as much.
These five routes in and around the Eifel are all on Motarva. Some link Belgium with Germany, one runs from the Moselle towards Luxembourg. So this isn’t a list of five near-identical loops, it’s a choice by start, shape and distance.
The five at a glance
| Route | Distance (approx.) | Start and finish | Shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ardennen en Eifel (2-daagse) — Dag 2 | 150 km | Sankt Vith to Verviers | A to B |
| De Eifel | 189 km | Malmedy to Sankt Vith | A to B |
| De Eifel / De Moezel — Dag 2 | 207 km | Cochem to Lac de la Haute-Sûre | A to B |
| Daun – Rondje Eifel, via Cochem | 272 km | Daun to Daun | Loop |
| Route Eifel St-Vith 2021 | 294 km | Sankt Vith to Sankt Vith | Loop |
The route names are the Dutch ones they carry on Motarva.
1. Ardennes and Eifel: a stage of about 150 km
Day two of this two-day trip links Sankt Vith with Verviers and, according to the route description, crosses Belgium and Germany. It’s the shortest option here. If you ride it on its own, sort out how you get to the start and home from the finish. “Day 2” in the name doesn’t mean you have to ride the whole trip.
2. De Eifel: from Malmedy to Sankt Vith
About 189 km, with a Belgian town at each end, but a good part of it runs through Germany. That makes it handy if you want to start on the Belgian side. It finishes in Sankt Vith, so count the way back to Malmedy if you need it.
3. From Cochem towards Luxembourg
Day two of the Eifel and Moselle trip is about 207 km and ends at the Lac de la Haute-Sûre, in Luxembourg. It suits a longer trip, or a ride home with Luxembourg on the way. Don’t book your night in Cochem after this stage out of habit: the finish is somewhere else.
4. A loop from Daun via Cochem
This loop brings you back to Daun after about 272 km. The route page estimates 6 hours 58 minutes of riding. Add your breaks and that’s a full day in the saddle, so choose it on purpose and don’t try to hang extra detours on it.
5. A long loop from Sankt Vith
The longest option is about 294 km and returns to Sankt Vith. Keep it for a day when you have plenty of time to ride. The year in the name belongs to the route file. It’s no promise that every road is exactly as it was then.
Plan your day around the ride
Starting in Daun and fancy one extra stop? The volcanic crater lakes, the maars, are an option in the area. Eifel Tourism describes the Gemündener Maar. Check the detour from your route yourself; the lake is not a stop on the GPX.
Just before you leave, look at the weather, roadworks and local signs. A planned distance tells you nothing about the traffic you’ll meet. If you have a long ride from home just to get there, a night away can work better than doing it all in one day.
