Motorcycle routes through Northern France with free GPX

Northern France starts minutes from the Belgian border and rides surprisingly well. The Avesnois and the Thierache hide quiet D roads between hedgerows and fortified churches, the Boulonnais rolls towards the coast, and the Opal Coast serves cliff-top views at Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez.

Quiet D roads, empty landscapes

The great asset of Northern France is space. The departmental roads carry little traffic, villages are far apart and the riding flows without constant interruptions. It is a different rhythm than Belgium: fewer curves per kilometre, more open throttle and wide views.

The Avesnois and the Thierache

South of the border near Maubeuge and Avesnes-sur-Helpe the landscape turns green and hilly. The Thierache just beyond it is known for its fortified churches. Together they make a fine day loop from Hainaut or the Ardennes.

The Opal Coast and the Boulonnais

Between Boulogne-sur-Mer and Calais the coast road climbs over the capes with views across the Channel. The Boulonnais behind it rolls through hills and villages. Popular on summer weekends, quiet and atmospheric off season.

Practical for Belgian riders

You cross the border without noticing, but France has its own rules. Ride with your documents in order, watch the speed limits, and check fuel stops on rural stretches: stations can be scarce and card-only outside opening hours.

Routes are shared by riders themselves. Always ride carefully, follow the highway code and local rules. You ride at your own risk.

Frequently asked questions

Is Northern France worth a motorcycle trip?

Yes. The quiet roads of the Avesnois, the Thierache and the Opal Coast are minutes from the border and feel very different from riding in Belgium.

What are the speed limits in France?

Most rural roads without a separator are limited to 80 km/h, with other limits posted locally. Check the current rules before you leave.

When is the Opal Coast at its best?

Spring and early autumn combine open roads with good light. Summer weekends get busy around the capes and the beach towns.
