Quiet D roads, empty landscapes
The great asset of Northern France is space. The departmental roads carry little traffic, villages are far apart and the riding flows without constant interruptions. It is a different rhythm than Belgium: fewer curves per kilometre, more open throttle and wide views.
The Avesnois and the Thierache
South of the border near Maubeuge and Avesnes-sur-Helpe the landscape turns green and hilly. The Thierache just beyond it is known for its fortified churches. Together they make a fine day loop from Hainaut or the Ardennes.
The Opal Coast and the Boulonnais
Between Boulogne-sur-Mer and Calais the coast road climbs over the capes with views across the Channel. The Boulonnais behind it rolls through hills and villages. Popular on summer weekends, quiet and atmospheric off season.
Practical for Belgian riders
You cross the border without noticing, but France has its own rules. Ride with your documents in order, watch the speed limits, and check fuel stops on rural stretches: stations can be scarce and card-only outside opening hours.
