Generate a round trip or a route to a place

Last updated October 17, 2026

In the Route Maker, choose Round trip for a curvy loop from your start, or To a place for a twisty way from A to B. Set the length in km or in hours and the curviness, then click Generate. Free on the website.

In this article
  1. Round trip
  2. To a place
  3. Long routes
  4. “This route takes too long to make”
  5. Not happy with it?

Round trip

  1. Open the Route Maker and choose Round trip.
  2. Set your start: search a place, click the map or use your location.
  3. Choose how long: km for a distance (10 to 300 km), or h for riding time (30 minutes to 6 hours, counted at about 55 km/h without stops). Then pick the curviness: Low, Medium or High.
  4. Optional: avoid highways, unpaved roads, tolls or ferries.
  5. Click Generate.

The loop comes out roughly as long as you asked: a bit shorter or longer, depending on the roads around you.

To a place

Choose To a place, set a start and an end, and we look for the twisty way from A to B. Swap start and end turns it round.

Long routes

A destination far away (up to about 1,500 km in a straight line) is planned in stages. The route shows as Provisional until every stage is done. That can take a few minutes. You can leave the page: the calculation carries on when you come back to the Route Maker. We only plan over land.

A pin in a car-free centre moves to the nearest road. A pin at sea gets a message straight away.

“This route takes too long to make”

Some routes take too long to work out, for example a very long loop with a lot of curves. You then get this message instead of a route. Try a shorter loop or fewer curves, or for a route to a place, points closer together. While a route is being made you can always press Cancel; your start, end and options stay as they are.

Not happy with it?

A generated route is a normal route: drag points, add stops, or generate again. Always check a route before you ride it.

Generating on the website is free with an account. In the iPhone app, generating a route (a round trip or to a place) is part of Motarva Pro, and so is riding a generated route turn by turn unless it is public. Drawing a route yourself in the app is free. See Motarva Pro.
